The History of Hampton Elementary School

Hampton Elementary School opened in September 1969. As the first principal of Hampton's new open area elementary school, Mr. John Hooper wanted the corridor walls to be used for children's paintings. Before he left many exciting paintings had been done by students of all ages. Mr. Hooper wishes all school could do the same.

In 1974, the new school principal was Mr. Neil Scott. One of his fondest memories was the overnight canoe trips with the grade 6 students. This is a memory that many students also have of Hampton Elementary School.

In 1986, Mr. Scott was on leave and Mrs. Della Webster came in as acting principal. She very much enjoyed the Peace Assembly organized in December by Mr. Rob Ward for grades 4, 5 and 6. As well in May of that year, all the students gathered on the hill beside the playground. Mr. Bill Merrithew came into the school and told Mrs. Webster she was needed on the playground.. As she came out the whole student population began singing "Happy Birthday."

From December of 1987 to September 1988, Mr. Roger Brown was the principal. His memories include Big Fair Day and the many activities which involved the gym such as mini basketball, trampoline and outdoor games.

Mr. Scott returned as Dr Scott in September 1988 and was principal until 1993 when he took a position at UNBSJ in the education department.

Mr. Kevin Robertson was the principal from September 1993 until his retirement in 2000. He enjoyed being involved with the students. As he leaves, he will always remember Peace Cranes 2000. He will remember the hours of involvement by students, teachers and parents throughout the production.

Ms. Miller was the principal from the fall of 2000 to the spring of 2003. She has moved to Quispamsis Elementary School. She leaves many memories and programs that she began at H.E.S. Under her guidance, running clubs, walking clubs, Student Leaders and our Hands Off, Feet Off and Words Off were established.

Mrs. McFarlane was the principal at H.E.S. from September 2003 to June 2004. She began teaching in the district in 1976. In 1987 Mrs. McFarlane began teaching Grade 4 at H.E.S. She enjoys running, computers and working with students and teachers. She left H.E.S. to pursue a career as the vice principal of Fairvale Elementary.

Mrs. Carroll is the present principal at H.E.S.  She began teaching in School District #50 in Grand Falls, N.B.  She then worked in District #8 as Vice Principal at Forest Hills School and came to HES in the fall of 2004.  Under her guidance, HES has had a school wide breakfast, a new discipline referral process and a skillstreaming behavior traning program.
